It just need soaking of Green gram or Green moong dhal overnight or atleast 10 hours before cooking. This is the base recipe and you can subsititute green gram with Chick pea. I havenot add much vegetables, but you can add peas, potato & tomato to have extra tanginess. Lets check today's one pot meal " Green Gram Masala rice".

Ingredients :

Green Gram - 1/2 cup (Soaked overnight)
Basmathi Rice - 1 cup
Onion - 2 Medium

Garam Masala - 1/4 tsp
Clove -1
Cinnamon - 1
Star Anise - 1
Bay leaf - 1

Method :

In a mixie, grind Garlic, Ginger, green chilli, fennel seeds and few mint leaves. Make it as smooth paste. Keep it aside.

Wash & soak Basmathi rice for 30 mins.

In a pressure pan, add Ghee + oil followed by adding cloves, bay leaf, cinnamon and star anise. Saute it for a while. Now add onion and fry till it become transparent. Now add the smooth masala paste (Prepared above) and mix it gently till the raw smell of Garlic goes off. (You can add few more Mint leaves if you like). Now add turmeric powder, channa masala powder, Garam masala and chili powder. Mix it well till the raw smell of turmeric go off.

Now add the soaked green gram and soaked rice to the pan. Add 1 tsp of Ghee and 1 1/2 cup of water, Mix the rice & green gram so that all masala get mixed well.Adjust the salt. Pressure cook for 3 whistles or cook it in low flame for around 20 mins. Once done fluff it with fork and make sure it doesnot turn gooey.

Garnish with corriander leaves and serve it with onion raitha/ Ketchup.

Note : You can do bit variation of the above recipe by adding potato and beans. As well you can try another dish by following the same recipe and replace with chick pea.

I dint pressure cook Green gram separately. I pressure cook with rice so that masala get mixed and its time saving method as well.

  1. Wow, it must be nice to have all this time to sit around at home making food. I have a job so I have to eat nothing but Lean Cuisine dinners, and I don't have time to defrost them."
    which is posted just above:
"I was kind of surprised to see that you bought your salt pre-made. It's really not that hard to make your own from sea water, and the taste is far superior. I wish people weren't so quick to take short cuts. If you have time to watch TV, you have time to make your own salt! Priorities!"
