Tamatar - Matar Pulao

Last week I bought loads of tomatoes since it was very cheap for Lunar New year. I did many dishes such as Thakkali thokku, stuffed tomato and impressed my family members. To end the craze for tomato, I tried tomato-peas pulao. It came out very well with nice aroma and colour. This recipe is simple and it can be base to prepare all types of pulao.

Here goes the recipe.

Ingredients :

Basmati Rice - 3/4 cup
Jeera - 1 tsp
Cloves - 3 to 4
Cinnamon stick - 1
Cardamom - 1
Star Anise - 1
Garlic - 3 to 4 cloves (finely chopped)
Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Garam masala - 1 tsp
Onion - 2
Tomato (chopped) - 1 cup
Green chilli -2 (slitted)
Matar (Green peas) - 1/2 cup
Corriander leaves - 2 tbsp
Ghee -1 tbsp
Oil - 2 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method :

Soak the basmati rice for 45 minutes.

Heat oil/ghee in a pan, add Jeera, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise.  onion, garlic, green chillis and saute it for a while. Add tomatoes and green peas.

Cook until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy. Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder & Garam masala. Mix it for a while. Reduce the flame and add the soaked basmati rice & fry it for a while.

Add 1 cup of water and adjust the salt. Cook it under medium flame till the rice is cooked. If you are using pressure cooker, cook the rice for 2 whisles. Simmer it for 3-5 minutes before you switch off the flame.

Garnish with fresh corriander leaves and serve hot with onion raitha. Yummy !
